Walk into any gym in Australia right now and you'll see two camps. One wears tees that fit like a tee. The other wears tees that look borrowed from someone a size or two up: wide through the body, shoulder seams halfway down the arm. Both are fine. They just do different jobs.
Every HTT design comes in both, so we get asked the same question a lot: which one should I get? Here's the honest answer, with the actual measurements.
What "oversized" actually means
An oversized tee isn't just a regular tee in a bigger size. It's cut differently. Our Oversized tees are the AS Colour Classic Oversized (5069): 220 gsm combed cotton, a boxy body, a dropped shoulder and a slightly shorter length than our standard tee.
That means:
- Wider through the chest and body. A size Medium measures 63 cm across the chest, laid flat.
- Dropped shoulder. The shoulder seam sits down the upper arm instead of on the shoulder point, which gives that relaxed, square look.
- Heavier cotton. 220 gsm cotton feels thicker and more substantial than a lightweight tee.
- A little shorter in the body than you'd expect for the width, so it sits square rather than long.
What "standard fit" means
Our Standard fit tees are the AS Colour Staple (5001), 100% cotton, in a regular fit. It's the tee most people picture when they hear "tee": the shoulder seam on the shoulder, a body that follows you without hugging, a normal length. A size Medium is 52 cm across the chest, laid flat.
Side by side
- Price: Oversized A$65. Standard A$60.
- Sizes: Oversized S to 3XL. Standard S to 5XL.
- Cut: Oversized is boxy with a dropped shoulder. Standard is a regular cut.
- Sizing advice: Oversized runs big, so size down one for a regular fit, or take your usual size for the full boxy look. Standard: take your usual size.
- The print: the same back print on both. On the oversized tee it sits a little smaller, because the body is wider.
Which one should you pick?
Pick Oversized if…
- You like the relaxed, boxy look that's everywhere in gyms at the moment.
- You want a heavier, thicker tee.
- You want room through the shoulders and body, and you're happy for it to look intentionally big.
- You wear S to 3XL.
Pick Standard fit if…
- You want a tee that looks like a tee, in the gym or out of it.
- You'd rather the print sit large across the upper back.
- You need 4XL or 5XL. Standard goes up to 5XL; oversized stops at 3XL.
- You don't want to think about sizing. Buy your usual size and you're done.
The sizing mistake most people make with oversized
The most common mistake is sizing up on an oversized tee "to make it more oversized". It's already oversized. Sizing up usually means sleeves past the elbow and a body that swallows you.
A good rule of thumb:
- Want it to fit like a regular tee, just heavier and squarer? Go one size down. If you're normally a Large, a Medium oversized fits like a regular tee.
- Want the full boxy look? Take your usual size.
The surest way to check: lay a tee you already like flat on the bed, measure straight across the chest from armpit to armpit, and compare it with the chart on our size guide. Every measurement there is the garment laid flat, in centimetres. Because every HTT tee is printed to order, we can't swap one for the wrong size, so it's worth the two minutes.
Does the fit change the design?
Every HTT design comes in both fits: a small logo on the left chest, one slogan across the upper back, white setup line and an orange punchline on a black tee. The back print is the same size on both, so on the wider oversized body it reads slightly smaller. On the product page, look for the "Same print, other fit" card under the description to jump straight between the two versions of a design.
A few to start with:
- Heavy weights. Short patience. (the tagline) or the standard fit version
- Put your weights back. That's your final set.
- Effort over attention.
Buying for someone else?
If you're guessing someone's size, Standard fit in their usual size is the safer bet: it's true to size and has the widest range. If you know they like the oversized look, oversized in their usual size gives them the boxy fit they're after. Our gift for a gym mate page has six designs that suit almost anyone.
The short version
Oversized (A$65) is boxy, heavier and runs big: size down for regular, keep your size for boxy. Standard (A$60) is a regular tee: take your usual size, and it goes up to 5XL. Both are printed to order in Brisbane, usually 6 to 10 business days to your door, with A$9.95 flat postage per order however many tees you add.
